Policy U-turn

Politically, it seems to be the death knell to subscribe to the flip-flop politics. But is it really so bad?
The rocker refers to change their position on an issue. The general public does not like politicians who flip flop on their positions, in part because they assume that it is done dishonestly for political reasons alone, and partly because they are easy to know what a candidate for public office represents. We, the voters are wondering whether the politician has no real faith or no integrity.
The problem is that flip-flop label is applicable without distinction. If the candidate to change his mind for some reason, is considered a lack of integrity and consistency. But it's always bad when the politicians to change their position on issues? Of course not. In fact, presidential candidate John McCain just made a statement, which was even worse than a flip-flop position fraudulent.
"I never changed any of my responsibilities," he proudly told the interviewer. I think this was to distinguish himself from other candidates, who had changed his mind, but what a terrible thing to be proud of for many decades after the political scene, boasts that he has learned nothing to change his mind on any subject? Apparently, he is convinced that he understood the whole truth in the seventies.

Think about it. Think of all the views of several decades ago. Do you agree with them all again? Mentally healthy human beings grow and mature. Change of opinion and opinions based on what they learned and experienced is part of that. Of course, consistency in the ideas and opinions is a normal rational person, at least in the short term. But do not change my mind almost certainly indicates a closed mind, and / or unwillingness to learn. He is considered a matter of probabilities. It is unlikely that there is nothing new has been learned or experienced in thirty years that could affect a person's mind, right? But even if true in the case of McCain, his pride evident to stay the same is still a problem. Suppose you find something new that should make him change his position? To maintain its "no-change" status, simply ignore it?
Moreover, it is not an attack against McCain. In fact, early career was one of the most honest men in Washington. As those who read about his experience being tortured for five years in a Vietnamese prison - and so forgive his captors - do not know how he was brave, but how intelligent and open-minded he was so good. But it is also the one who makes a point of pride that he never changed his positions.
I changed my mind
When there is a better policy, or idea that is more in line with the truth, the whole person, including a politician, choose the right? Point of view and opinions should change from time to time, so if we are able to learn. Unfortunately, the evolution of attitudes that we see in an election are usually not re-evaluations honest, but politically calculated move.
When changing honest, although there is a scenario that I see. Some honest politician (I'm an optimist) is accused of flip flop on an issue. He had a good and honest reasons for the change for good reasons, so instead of defending themselves in the usual way, with a tortured logic that shows how his attitude was not really change, it says the following:
"It 'true that I have changed my position. I looked carefully at this and realize that there is a better way. Furthermore, I promise always to change my position when this happens. I promise not to attack my views or willfully positions or points of pride of my political views when I see that there is a better country and a better view, the facts. "
That will not happen any time soon, of course. Such a discourse would need an honest politician and one who is brave - not likely a combination of our politicians. But perhaps the political climate will change just enough to allow some honest "about face" to be acceptable to voters.
